mike lafleur

Mike was born into gymnastics in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where his parents and Grandparents were also competing gymnasts.  While competing in high school, in 1974, Mike became the first person in Wisconsin State history to compete a double back flip on floor!  After high school Mike attended Indiana University on a full gymnastics scholarship.  While at Indiana Mike completed his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Physical Education with a coaching concentration.  After college, Mike joined his family at LaFleur’s Largo in 1984.  It was there that he met his wife Melody and soon after they purchased the gym business from Mike’s family and in 2004 they designed and built the gym we call home today.  Mike and Melody have a daughter, Kaley, that competed in gymnastics through college making her the 4th generation of competing gymnasts in the LaFleur family!  Mike was voted Florida and Region 8 “Coach of the Year” in 2007 and later inducted into the USAG “Region 8 Hall of Fame” in 2017.

Melody was born near Chicago, Illinois, but moved to Florida when she was just 4 years old.  The youngest of 8, Melody first began gymnastics at age 10.  She later trained under Gene Stowe and Val Hammond at "Apollo" in Clearwater where she remained throughout high school as a Class I competitor.  During this time she competed in several National Championships and received a full scholarship to the University of Alabama in 1981.   After college, Melody began coaching in the St. Pete Florida area  and it was there that she met husband Mike and they married in 1987.  In 2004 they designed and built the gym we call home today.  Mike and Melody have one child, a daughter named Kaley, who also competed through level 10 and went on to compete for West Chester U. in Pennsylvania.  Since first starting to coach at LaFleur's Melody has helped produce over 800 State Champions, 92 Regional Champions, 105 National Qualifiers, and over 25 college scholarship recipients!   She continues to coach Beam and Floor for levels 8-10 as well as over-seeing the entire Team program.   Melody is very passionate about her coaching and is very thankful that she has been able to coach so many great kids over the years!  In 2018 Melody was inducted into the USAG “Region 8 Hall of Fame”!
